Substance use and substance use disorders (SUDs) are common in counseling practice, and counselors must be well-versed in their etiology, symptomology, and treatment. Counselors must be prepared to recognize, screen, and assess for SUD and potentially co-occurring mental health disorders. When possible, counselors are prepared to treat SUDs and their impacts in ethically and culturally informed ways, or to provide appropriate referrals.
