Journal of College Counseling Submission Guidelines

Mission and Scope

The Journal of College Counseling (JCC) advances knowledge in college counseling and supports the work of counseling professionals at 2 and 4 year colleges and universities. Contributors include practitioners, researchers, and educators.

All manuscripts must be grounded in current scholarly literature, clearly communicate ideas in a well organized format, and demonstrate implications for counseling practice in higher education. Research submissions must be based on sound, defensible qualitative or quantitative methodologies.

Manuscript Categories

Research Articles
Research manuscripts may use quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods designs and must follow APA (7th ed.) guidelines. Submissions should address significant questions relevant to college counseling, include a thorough review of relevant literature, and present implications for practice and future research.
Professional Issues and Innovative Practice
These manuscripts focus on current issues or emerging practices in higher education counseling. Submissions should provide an in depth analysis of a current issue, include a critical review of relevant literature and offer implications for practice and future research.
College Counseling Case Studies
Case studies illustrate important aspects of clinical practice in college counseling and support professional development. Authors must take all necessary steps to protect client confidentiality.

Manuscript Submission

Submit manuscripts electronically as a single Microsoft Word (.doc) file to [submission website link].

Review Process

All submissions undergo blind peer review by at least two editorial board members. The Editor in Chief is responsible for all final publication decisions. Please be aware that most manuscripts require revisions prior to acceptance.

Originality

Manuscripts must not be under review elsewhere or previously published in substantially similar form.

Manuscript Preparation

All manuscripts must follow the APA Publication Manual (7th ed.) and be concise yet sufficiently detailed for scholarly review.

Page Limit

Manuscripts must not exceed 25 double spaced pages, including references, tables, and figures. Shorter submissions—especially Innovative Practice manuscripts—are welcome.

Blind Review Requirements

Authors must ensure that manuscripts contain no identifying information, including:

Names, affiliations, or acknowledgments
Self citing references that reveal identity (please mask as “Authors, 2011”)

Author information should appear only on a separate title page (see below).

Title Page

Page 1 of the blinded manuscript should contain only the manuscript title. Upload a separate file labeled “Title Page” containing:

Article title
Full names and affiliations of all authors (no degrees or titles)
Author notes or acknowledgments
Complete contact information for the corresponding author

Format example: Author Name, Department, University, City (Current affiliation if changed) Correspondence: Author Name, full mailing address, City, State, ZIP (email)

Abstract and Keywords

Page 2 of the manuscript should contain an abstract of 50-75 words, written in clear, non-technical language. Following the abstract, please list a maximum of 3 keywords.

Tables and Figures

The maximum number of tables and figures per manuscript is 3 tables and 2 figures. Do not embed the tables and figures in the manuscript itself, but rather indicate a callout for them, and place each on a separate page following the references section. Figures must be high resolution (600–1200 dpi; 300 dpi for halftones) in JPEG or PDF format

References

All in text citations must appear in the reference list and vice versa. References must follow APA style. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure accuracy and consistency of all citations.

Footnotes

Footnotes are not permitted.

Language and Terminology

Please follow the APA guidelines for nondiscriminatory language. Use the terms counseling, counselor, and client consistently.

Permissions

Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission to reproduce quotations totaling 400+ words from a single source, or previously published tables or figures (in whole or in part). Permission documentation must be submitted upon acceptance.
